Match Report from Banbury Road By Glenn Lawrence

A five star Southam United performance saw the Saints season finish on a high note as James Graham smashed a 75th minute hat-trick to condemn Meir KA to a 5-0 drubbing at Banbury Road.Having been Midlands Combination Premier Division title contenders for much of the season United's recent form over the past two months has seen Barry Shearsby's side slip away, with the Saints looked to cement a third place finish behind Champions elect Coleshill Town and Highgate United.

In the opening minute Glen Webb fired wide following a Jones pass and just a minute later Jones was guilty of missing a guilt edged chance when he blazed over the crossbar from 20 yards out, when well placed in front of the goal.Only the outstretched boot of Meir's Kyle Brookes denied Ian Wilson as he latched onto Constable's pass, Wilson's goal bound strike skimming off the boot of Brookes and flashing across the Meir goal-mouth. With Southam United forcing the early pace and subjecting the visitors to some good pressure Britton on 25 minutes forced Amison in the visitors goal to parry down his shot while four minutes later Constable curled a 25 yard-free kick wide.Only another fine save from Ritchie Amison denied James Graham on 31 minutes, from the resulting Constable corner a scramble in the Meir defence saw Ian Wilson's shot blocked the loose ball failing too Graham who fired over the crossbar from 3 yards out.Southam United took the lead on 34 minutes when Stefan Jones  inch perfect cross from the right found James Graham at the far post who hit home ahead of Meir defender Scott Wilson from 5 yards out.Only another fine block from Meir's Ritchie Amison denied the home side once again just a minute later as the flying air bound goalkeeper pushed away at full stretch Graham's fierce shot, the goalkeeper then pouncing to smother the loose ball, following an Ian Wilson inch perfect pass.Southam United doubled their lead on 36 minutes when James Graham hit home from 8 yards out following Glen Webb's cross, as the Saints took into the turn around point a two-nil half-time interval lead.

United failed to capitalise on an early second half free-kick two minutes after the restart, while three minutes later Graham blazed over the crossbar from 22 yards out.As Amison continued to pull off a series of flying saves, he again denied Southam on 53 minutes with another fine save pushing Webb's shot over the near upright.James Graham completed a 75th minute hat-trick when he latched onto Richard Kay's pass to hit home from inside the 6 yard box.Meir continued to battle well and on 76 minutes only the outstretched boot of United goalkeeper Turner denied the visitors as Adam Coulson's shot skimmed off Turner's extended leg.Southam United was awarded a 78th minute penalty when Meir Sub Ritchie Sands was penalized for his challenge on Stefan Jones, from the resulting spot-kick Jones make no mistake with a well driven penalty.Lee Constable further increased Southam's lead on 83 minutes when he hit home from 19 yards out following Shearsby's pass.Good work by Jones saw him go close in the closing stages while at the other end Turner pulled off a splendid save to denied the visitors on 85 minutes, as Coulston found Shaun Reaney who's well struck shot was superbly pushed away by United's airborne goalkeeper Chris Turner.Lee Constable forced Amison to scoop up his weak low drive on 89 minutes before Referee Mr Steve McCarthy called time of Southam United's season.

An enjoyed and entertaining game from a United perspective they played and passed the ball well today creating some good goals but as time goes by Saints Manager Barry Shearsby is left to wonder what might have been if United's recent form had not taken a dip following a 4-0 drubbing at Walsall Wood back at the beginning of March. As for Meir they worked and battled hard and in the second half were perhaps rather unlucky not have reduced the arrears as they finished off their season third-from-bottom.A season of progress for Southam United but a disappointing end of season run-in means leaves Saints to ponder of what might have been this season. With Southam playing good free flowing enjoyable and entertaining football today they finished on a high note after a negative few weeks

Glenn Lawrence hopes you have enjoyed some of his coverage from around the Midlands Combination this season.

Brocton 4  Pershore Town 0

Brocton ended the season in style with 4-0 win over Pershore Town. The game which was Brocton’s last at Heath Hayes after a four year tenure saw manager Dave Berks pick a near full strength team after a few weeks of squad rotation and experimentation. The selection seemed to pay dividends as the Badgers showed some of the movement and passing which typified their game in the first half of the season. Their confidence seemed to flood back and as early as the 3rd minute Dave Langston slipped the ball to Ben Harrison and Harrison in turn found Gary Fife. His well timed run beat the off side trap, but unfortunately his cross also beat an in rushing Andy Harrison. A minute later when a leap by Lee Scott won a header Fife ran on  to the flick and hit his cross early forcing a touch over from the retreating keeper.

Matt Skinner began the move which got Brocton’s scoring started. He won the ball at the back and found the ever available Gary Fife. Fife swung the ball across midfield to Richard Jones and Jones brought in Andy Hume. Hume’s ball to the left bounced over the last defender and left Lee Scott time to pick his spot to make it 1-0.

Good closing down by Andy Hume soon forced another error from Pershore and Ben Harrison picked up the loose ball, delivering it into Steve Bennett’s run and his cross just skimmed Andy Harrison’s head and ran free. Hume suffered a dead leg and was replaced by James Dyke just on the stroke of half time.

Dyke was in the thick of the action as the second period began when Andy Harrison made room for a near post cross and he hammered a volley onto the post.

Dyke then made it 2-0 with an even better volley, once again set up by the hard working Andy Harrison.

Richard Miller made it a pair of inspired substitutions by manager Dave Berks as he got the goals he had been threatening score for weeks. On 82 minutes in a move begun by Richard Jones who had an excellent game at fullback Andy Harrison seemed to have found himself in a cul de sac, but wriggled out of it and set up the chance for Miller to make it 3-0 which he accepted gratefully. Then Lee Scott ran through the back four and held off a defender before slipping the ball to Miller, who once again made no mistake as the Badgers ran out 4-0 winners.

Brocton have ended the season in 9th place and this will be a useful platform to build on in 2008-09 as the club settle into their new home at Silkmore Lane Stafford.

End of season awards went to Andy Harrison (Players’ Player of the season) Steve Bennett (Young Player of the season) Richard Reeves (Managers Player of the season) Brian & Barbara Chandler (Clubman of the year)

WEDNESBURY CHARITY CUP.

DARLASTON TOWN 3 v 1 WALSALL WOOD.

Wood's season came to a disappointing end at Waverley Road as Town's keeper only made one mistake in a real blood and thunder cup tie.

Town almost took the lead in the first minute with Taylor feeding Denis Robinson wide on the right, his cross was hit beyond the far post and was returned back by Follows to Robinson, whose first time strike was saved with his feet by keeper Rob Clarke.

On 5 minutes Anthony Juxon red Simeon Tulloch wide left, he left his marker for dead, raced into the Town box and brought a full length save from keeper Smith.

Then after 12 minutes, Price crossed from the left to find Taylor who turned and flashed a shot well wide.  13 proved unlucky for Wood, Williams delivered a free kick from wide right, keeper Clarke's clearance ricocheted off Justin and into the net.  5 minutes later it was 2 - 0, John's collected the ball from a left wing throw, he drifted across the face of the box and his low drive flashed just inside the post.

On 21 minutes Peter Robinson won the ball in midfield and found Theo Lewars, he went through one tackle and his shot was deflected.  22 minutes gone and James Fisher hit a free kick up the hill from the halfway line. Keeper Smith completely misjudging the ball and it flew into the roof of the net.

With 97 minutes gone, Follows cleverly set-up Johns in the box, his lob beat Clarke but Lee Knight raced back to clear off the line.  4 minutes later Johns set up Taylor who twisted and turned in the box but shot over the angle.

There was a fiery start to the second half with a player from each side going into the book in separate incidents.  The first goalmouth action came after 53 minutes.  Follows raced on to a through ball, keeper Clarke saving with his feet.  2 minutes later Follows fed Johns, who ran across the face of the Wood ox and flashed a cross shot well wide.  Johns then robbed a defender wide right, cut inside and set up Taylor who hit a snap shot just wide.  I was 3 - 1 on 60 minutes.  Follows picked a ball up wide left, ran at the defence and scored with a low drive from 20 yards.

Wood Almost reduced the arrears on 73 minutes, from a left wing corner Pete Robinson flashed a near post header over the angle.  On 87 minutes, a free kick was picked up by Tulloch who delivered the ball into the box, Knight's shot deflected for a corner.  Right on time, Paul Curtin found Tulloch, Smith taking his cross off the head of Robinson.

Darlaston now meet Wednesfield in the semi-final with the winners going on to meet Brereton Social in the final at Oak Park on Tuesday May 13th, kick off 7.45 p.m.
